Everyone by now will have heard of ‘Divorce Day’ or ‘Divorce Week’. According to countless newspapers and social media it is the first day / week of the month when we family solicitors are inundated with calls.
However, I find this not to be the case at all. Yes don’t get me wrong I’ve had a few enquiries this week but hardly a January rush and in fact most of the people through my door are here due to children contact difficulties that they have experienced over the Christmas period and are wanting just a little advice to help them resolve the problem. I offer 30 minutes free advice and tend to find that most clients use this to steer them in the right direction.
In fact most divorce enquiries I see for an initial free meeting I never hear from again or if I do it is some weeks if not months later. They come to see as they need some support and to discuss if their marriage is truly over what they can and can’t do and what financial support they will receive. Once they have been armed with the knowledge they feel more confident and in fact resolve their marital problems following the realisation that they don’t want their marriage to end.
If you are considering getting divorced, don’t rush because you think it may be harder to get an appointment. Take the time to decide whether Divorcing is right for you, look at alternative options, counselling (Relate do some great relationship and family counselling), mediation or in fact come in, take the advice and go away to digest before acting.
Gillian Lavelle offers 30 minute free initial advice appointments.
