MBH Solicitors have recently in collaboration with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) provided a secondment to an aspiring solicitor who required experience in different areas of law before he was able to qualify.
Calum says, “I am currently employed by the CPS as a Solicitor Apprentice. The apprenticeship is 6 years in length and includes the LLB law degree and the Solicitors Qualifying Examination. The reason for my placement was to broaden my knowledge in relation to other areas of law so that I may qualify as solicitor at its conclusion.
My six-month placement at MBH has been fantastic. Both the lawyers and the teams which support them are highly knowledgeable and experienced in their relevant fields. Being able to work alongside them has therefore been an invaluable opportunity to gain a greater understanding regarding other areas of law and how those areas operate in practice.
During my placement, I was given the chance to work as part of the conveyancing and private client (wills & probate) teams. From my very first week, I was able to shadow the Partners responsible for those departments, observe client meetings, and assist the teams by conducting some legal research. As time went on, I was able to work more independently for the firm. I was tasked to draft legal documents, liaise with clients directly, and work continuously on certain files to ensure that they were progressed expeditiously.
If I ever had a question regarding the law or a particular process, either the Partners or a different member of the team were always on hand and more than willing to assist.
My experience at MBH has been extremely varied and enjoyable. It has been a great place to work, and I am very grateful to MBH for having me.
I now look forward to returning to the CPS to complete my apprenticeship and to start work as a Crown Prosecutor in the coming years.”
MBH continue to offer work experience to the community for aspiring lawyers. Gillian Lavelle, Senior Partner says, “it has been a pleasure to have Calum join us. We believe it provides invaluable opportunity to see and learn on the job especially for those who are undecided in their future. We wish Calum all the best with his future at the CPS and we are sure that he will do great things”.
